# ChatGPT's Memory Lives in Five Places. Here's How to Control Each One

Most people picture ChatGPT's memory as one list you can clear. It isn't. It pulls from up to five sources, and deleting something from one of them doesn't remove it from the others. Here's where your context actually lives, a 10-minute audit, and a simple rule for what should go where.

**Details checked against [OpenAI's Memory in ChatGPT help article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8590148-memory-faq) and [ChatGPT release notes](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6825453-chatgpt-release-notes) on September 18, 2026.**

## The five sources

Which of these you have depends on your plan and region. Find them under **Settings → Personalization → Memory**.

| Source | What it holds | How to fix it | Gotcha |
| ------ | ------------- | ------------- | ------ |
| **Saved memories** | Details you asked it to remember, or that it saved | Edit or delete them in Memory settings, or ask it to forget | Deleting the original chat doesn't delete the memory |
| **Chat history** | Context pulled from past chats | Turn off **Reference chat history** | What's remembered is scheduled for deletion within 30 days. The chats themselves stay |
| **Custom instructions** | What you tell it directly about you and how to respond | Rewrite them | Up to 5,000 characters on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu |
| **Library files** | Files you've saved | Delete the file | Easy to forget they're a source |
| **Connected apps** | Content from apps like Gmail | Disconnect the app | Chats that already used that content aren't deleted |

## The 10-minute audit

1. **Ask it directly.**

```text
What do you remember about me? Group it by where it comes from: saved memories, past chats, custom instructions, files or connected apps. Flag anything that looks outdated, wrong or oddly specific.
```

2. **Open the memory summary.** Correct anything wrong in the text field, or highlight text and fix it.
3. **Check Sources.** When an answer uses your personal context, Sources can appear below it and show which chat, memory or file shaped the answer.
4. **Delete at the source.** For something you want truly gone, delete the saved memory **and** the chat where you first mentioned it, plus any files or app connections that contain it.
5. **Write a never-remember list.** Health details, other people's private information, anything you wouldn't want resurfacing in a work chat. Keep those for unpersonalized temporary chats.

## Put context in the right place

Memory is the right home for context that changes over time. Stable context belongs where you control it directly.

| Context | Where it goes | Why |
| ------- | ------------- | --- |
| Stable facts and preferences, like your role, tone and format | **Custom instructions** | You wrote it, you control it, and it doesn't drift |
| One project or client | **A Project with project-only memory** | It stays out of everything else |
| Sensitive or one-off questions | **Unpersonalized temporary chat** | Nothing is used or saved |
| Evolving context, like current priorities | **Memory** | Let it update, and audit it monthly |

To teach it on purpose, don't scatter "remember this" across chats. Write it once:

```text
Help me write custom instructions. Ask me 8 questions about my work, goals, preferred tone and format, and what I never want. Then give me a version under 1,500 characters that I can paste in.
```

## Keep contexts separate

- **Project-only memory:** chats in a project can only reference other chats in the same project, and nothing outside can reference them. You can switch an existing project from its **•••** menu → **Project settings** → **Memory**. Shared projects are always project-only. ChatGPT Work isn't available in project-only projects.
- **Temporary chat:** before you start one, choose whether it uses your memories, custom instructions and plugins. Either way, temporary chats never create or update memories. If you save one, it becomes a regular chat.

## Gotchas worth knowing

- **"Don't mention this again" isn't delete.** It reduces future mentions, but the source stays.
- **The summary isn't everything.** It's a high-level view and can leave details out.
- **Memory can shape web searches.** It may use details like your location or diet to write a better search query.
- **Deleted memories can live in logs** for up to 30 days, for safety and debugging.
- **Training is a separate switch.** On personal accounts, chats and remembered information can be used to improve models while **Improve the model for everyone** is on in Data controls.

## Do this now

- [ ] Run the audit prompt and fix what's wrong
- [ ] Move your stable preferences into custom instructions
- [ ] Switch your most sensitive project to project-only memory
- [ ] Set a monthly reminder to repeat the audit
